Mew leads Irish Seniors by three

England’s Alan Mew made an eagle and six birdies in a six-under 65 to lead the Irish Amateur Open after the opening round at Belvoir Park.

He leads by three strokes from Wales’ Nigel Evans and Royal Curragh’s Alan Egan with the 2017 champion, Welshman Nick Grimmitt, tied for third on one-under with Hong Kong’s Douglas Williams.

Castlemartyr’s John O’Brien was fifth on level par after a 71 with Royal Dublin’s Noel McGrane, Portstewart’s Ansley Stewart and Westport’s Liam Halpin in an 11-strong group on one-over.
