Moriarty tops in final TaylorMade Winter Series event of 2019

Spawell’s Colm Moriarty made five birdies in a four-under 67 to card the best round of the day in the final TaylorMade Winter Series outing of 2019 at Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links.
The Athlone professional won the nett on a countback from Lucan’s Pio O’Leary as Grange professional Michael McDermott shot a three-under 68 to win the gross by two strokes from Royal Dublin’s Max Kennedy and Palmerstown Stud’s Ross McCormack.
Moriarty made his only bogey on the day at the eighth, but birdies at the seventh, ninth, 10th, 14th and 16th helped him top the 98-strong field.
Playing off six, O’Leary went out in level par as he combined birdies at the second and sixth with bogeys at the fifth and ninth.
After following a bogey at the 13th with a birdie at the 14th, he made double bogey on the tough 17th to come home in two-over for a 73 gross and 67 nett.
Tullamore’s Stuart Grehan took the third nett prize with a level par 71 as the followed early bogeys at the first and third with birdies at the ninth and 10th before cancelling out a bogey at the 16th with a closing birdie three.
McDermott birdied the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth to turn in 31 before bogeys at the 16th and 17th forced him to settle for a 68 and a two-shot win over Boys international Kennedy.
The Royal Dublin star opened with birdies at the first two holes and picked up another shot at the sixth before following a bogey on the fifth with a double-bogey at the seventh to turn in level par. He came him in one-under-par, however, mixing eight pars with a birdie on the 16th in an excellent 70.
McCormack was out in two-under as he followed a bogey at the second with birdies on the fifth, sixth and ninth. However, he came home in one-over-par as his birdie at the 11th was cancelled out by bogeys on the 10th and 18th.
