Age is just a number for Guatemala’s Beatriz Arenas, and she proved it in Dublin on Friday when she won the Irish Senior Women’s Amateur Open Strokeplay title at the age of 70.

A 12-time participant in the Espirito Santo Trophy, she shot three successive, eight over 82s at Grange Golf Club to win by two strokes on 24-over par from Grange’s Sheena McElroy, The Island’s Gertie McMullen and American Gigi Higgins.

Arenas explained the secret of her success during the recent World Amateur Team Championships at Carton House.

She said: “I am 70 years of age. I don't take liquor, and I never get on top of a car (buggy) playing golf. Never. I walk and walk. Even if I am tired, I still walk.

"What I really think it's to be positive in life. Be happy with what life gives you. That makes you strong. I take a lot of vitamins, and I do yoga and cross fit. I don't run. No running. Not even when I was 15, I didn't run.

"To be positive and always think that you can do the things."
