Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow opened with a one-under 71s in the Symetra Tour Championship at Daytona Beach to trail leader Pavarisa Yoktuan of Thailand by nine shots.
Ranked 35th in the money list, Maguire needs to win the event to make the top 10 alongside fourth ranked Meadow, who will be awarded LPGA Tour cards.
But if she can clinch a top 10 finish, she will avoid a trip to Stage II of the Q-School and qualify directly for the new Q-Series.
Yoktuan, who is No. 7 in the Volvik Race for the Card, separated herself with a simply sensational bogey-free, 10-under par 62 to lead by two sots from last week’s winner, Ruixin Liu of China (64).
Maguire and Meadow are tied for 31st on one-under, three strokes outside the top 10.
