European Seniors: Carvill puts Ireland in pole; Webb leads women

Jim Carvill fired a six-under par 66 to share the individual lead as Ireland dominated the opening strokeplay qualifying round for the European Senior Men's Team Championship at PGA Sweden National.

The reigning Irish Seniors Close champion made eight birdies to share top spot with Scotland's Ronnie Clark. helping Ireland lead the team standings by five strokes from Scotland on 13-under par heading into Wednesday's second qualifying round.

Portmarnock's Adrian Morrow, the winner of the Swedish title at PGA Sweden National earlier this season, shot a three-under 69 as Karl Bornemann and Garth McGimpsey fired 70s and Eamonn Haugh a 72.

Defending champions Ireland are tied for seventh place after the first qualifying round of the European Senior Ladies' Team Championship at Skalica Golf Resort in Slovakia.

Laura Webb finished the opening day just one stroke off the lead after a one-over 73 with Suzanne Corcoran carding a 77, Gertie McMullen 78, Sheena McElroy 79 and Catherine Reilly and Carol Wickham 80s.

That left Ireland in seventh place in the team standings and under pressure to make the top eight who will battle for the title after today's second strokeplay qualifying round.
