Liam Johnston won the Carrick Neill Scottish Men’s Open Championship as the Irish enjoyed a hit-and-miss week at Western Gailes.

While Rowan Lester, Colin Fairweather, Colm Campbell and Jordan Hood missed the cut, Whitehead’s John Ross Galbraith carded rounds of 69 and 71 on Sunday to jump from 22nd to eighth on two-under-par.

He finished seven strokes behind Johnston, who held a share of the overnight lead with Craig Howie and shots rounds of 69 and 71 to win by two strokes from Hoylake’s Matthew Jordan on nine-under par.

Laytown and Bettystown's Thomas Mulligan, 15th at halfway, closed with a brace of 75s to end up tied 30th on seven over with Naas’ Conor O’Rourke two shots further back in 34th after another roller-coaster day that saw him following an 81 with a 68.

His clubmate Jonathan Yates was 36th on 11-over.
