Irish Intervarsity: Rafferty and Burke hit the front at Enniscrone

Maynooth's Caolan Rafferty and Ulster's Shannon Burke lead the way heading into their final rounds in the Irish Intervarsity Championship at Enniscrone.
Dundalk native Rafferty, a current international, made five birdies in a sensational four-under 69 — the best round of the week so far by two strokes — to lead the men's event by a shot on one-over-par 147 from his ever-improving Maynooth teammate Eugene Smith, who posted a fine 71.
Overnight leader Ronan Mullarney, who was officially called up to the Irish Senior panel on Thursday, added a two-over 75 to his opening 74 to lurk just two strokes behind on three-over.
Defending champion John Hickey (74) from Cork IT is still in with a chance as he is just four shots off the lead in a share of fourth with classman Gary Ward (76), the consistent Anthony McDaid (76) from Dublin Business School and UCD's Ben Murray (76) on five-over.
In the women's championship, Burke shot a magnificent, three-under 70 to lead by two strokes from Maynooth's Mary Doyle on four-over 150.
Two-over after bogeys at the first and fifth, she played the last 12 holes superbly, she made five birdies in ten holes from the eighth, including a hattrick of twos at the eighth, 11th and 17th.
Doyle had an eagle two at the 10th in a one-over 74 to sit alone in second with fellow Maynooth player Molly Dowling a shot further back on seven-over after a 75.
The cut for the top 30 and ties in the men's event fell at 16-over 162 with the top seven in the women's event progressing on 15-over 161.
