Mixed luck for the Irish in Sweden

A few weeks ago he would have missed the cut but riding the wave of momentum gathered at Wentworth and Walton Heath, Shane Lowry birdied the 18th and ended up making the one over par cut with a shot to spare in the Nordea Masters.

The Clara man was three under after five but bogeyed the sixth and seventh and triple bogeyed the ninth to turn for home with the cut looming at a windy PGA Sweden National.

He looked safe again when he birdied the 11th and 14th but bogeyed the 15th and 16th before a birdie at the last for a 73 left him tied for 43rd on level par with Michael Hoey, who shot a 75.

Peter Lawrie's luck also appears to be changing as he shot a fine 70 to make the cut on the mark as Simon Thornton (75) missed by one and Damien McGrane shot a second successive 77 to miss out by nine.

At the pointy end of the leaderboard, rookie Kevin Phelan (70) is three off the pace, tied for 14th behind Alvaro Quiros, Frenchman Victor Dubuisson and England’s Eddie Pepperell who lead on six under par.

But it was a disappointing day for Gareth Maybin, who moved into an early share of the lead before back to back doubles at the 16th and 17th for a 75 saw him fall back to tied 23rd on two under.

Dubuisson, who is returning from a shoulder injury, had earlier set the pace with a round of 69, while Pepperell recovered from a double bogey on the par three fourth hole with two birdies on the back nine, including the finishing hole, to retain a share of the lead.

World No 2 Henrik Stenson momentarily delighted the home fans when he moved to the top of the leaderboard on seven under par with consecutive birdies on the 14th and 15th hole. However, a bogey followed on the 16th and he then found the water on the 17th, which lead to a double bogey five.

A birdie on the last hole meant the 2013 Race to Dubai champion signed for a round of 70, and on five under par he is only one shot back going into the weekend, in a share of fourth alongside compatriot Jens Dantorp (73), Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee  (70), Welshman Bradley Dredge (70) and Scottish pair Stephen Gallacher (72) and Chris Doak (69).
