Morrow hits the front in Irish Seniors at Waterville

Adrian Morrow got his bid for a third Irish Seniors Open victory in six years off the ideal start when he compiled a superb two under par 70 to share the first round lead with England's Alan Mew at spectacular Waterville Golf Links.

The Portmarnock man, winner of four regular "majors" (East 1975, 1983; South 1983, 1996,) took advantage of perfect conditions at the Co Kerry links to put himself in position for yet another title challenge.

Woodbrook's John L Hughes, playing in the last group of the day, carded a level-par 72 to finish the opening round in solo third.

Another English player, David Lane, carded a 73 and is three shots behind, but leads the Over 70s category while also sharing fourth place overall in the tournament with his countryman, Adrian Donkersley.

The evergreen Tom Cleary of Cork is the next best of the Irish in joint sixth, four strokes off the pace after a 74.
