Headfort's Senior Scratch Cup takes place next weekend — May  17-18 — with World Amateur Golf Ranking points up for grabs for the first time.

Up to 90 top class golfers from all over Ireland will play Headfort New — ranked 6th best parkland course in Ireland by Backspin Magazine — on Saturday morning before taking on Headfort Old in the afternoon.

The top 50 and ties will then qualify for the final two rounds on the New on Sunday in an event sponsored by Larry O'Brien of Supervalu-Kells.

Headfort player and Irish international Rory McNamara is expected to lead the local challenge. With holder Simon Ward now a professional, Headfort's Rory McNamara will be keen to put his the trophy on Sunday evening.

European Tour professional Damien McGrane is delighted with the growth of the event at his home club.

“It’s great to see Headfort get together to pool its resources with two wonderful courses here for the category one player," McGrane said. "It’s a good test of golf and will certainly test all aspects of their game where they will use every club in the bag. So Headfort, with the backing of SuperValu (Kells) will put on a good test of golf with the golf courses in great condition.”

The draw will be released on Thursday, May 15.
