Damien McGrane is just four shots off the clubhouse lead in the weather-affected NH Collection Open in Spain.
As Shane Lowry added a 78 to his opening 79 — taking 32 putts on the rollercoaster greens at La Reserva de Sotogrande after racking up 36 on Thursday — to finish near the back of the field on 13 over par, McGrane made four birdies and just one bogey in a 69, one of just seven sub-70 rounds completed on Friday.
He's in a 14-man logjam for seventh place with Waterford Castle's Kevin Phelan one under for his second round and tied for 34th on two over through 13 holes.
Simon Thornton had an eagle, two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey in a 73 to share 47th on three over par.
But David Higgins shot 73-77 to finish two shots outside the projected cut on six over with Peter Lawrie gamely battling back from 12 over through 20 holes to eight over with six holes of his second round to complete on Saturday.
England’s David Horsey joined clubhouse leader Marc Warren at the top of the leaderboard on five under par.
Horsey was four under par for his round with three holes remaining when bad light forced play to stop for the day with 45 players set to return at 9am on Saturday to finish their second rounds.
