Euro joy for Ireland's Men and Boys, agony for Ladies and Girls

Kevin Phelan at Silkeborg. Ireland qualified in the top flight at the European Men’s and European Boys’ Amateur Team Championships in Denmark and Scotland respectively. But there was disappointment as the Ladies and Girls missed out in England and Sweden.

In the Men’s Championship at Silkeborg Golf Club in Denmark, Padraig Hogan’s charges finished second in strokeplay qualifying on 21 over par, six strokes adirft of France with England (23 over), Germany (23 over), Scotland (24 over), Denmark (32 over), the Netherlands (37 over) and Austria (38 over) making up the rest of the top eight.

Ireland will now face the Netherlands in Thursday’s quarterfinals with the winners going on to face hosts Denmark or England. France will meet Austria with the winner of that one taking on Germany or Scotland     

SilkeborgHeadfort’s Rory McNamara, the Island’s Gavin Moynihan and Naas’ Jack Hume all carded one over 73s on the tight Silkeborg track with Waterford Castle’s Kevin Phelan weighing in with a 74 and Greystones’ Paul Dunne a 77. Reeve Whitson’s 83 was discarded.

In the European Boys Team Championship at Murcar Links in Aberdeen, Ireland finished seventh in qualifying to make the Top Flight and will face England, who finished second in qualifying to Italy, in Thursday’s quarter-finals.

Sean Flanagan was Ireland’s top peformer with a two over 73 as James Sugrue, Paul McBride (who had an eagle two at the sixth) and Alec Myles carded 74s and Robin Dawson a 75. Gareth Lappin’s 84 was discarded. Scores

In the European Ladies’ Amateur Team Championship at Fulford, Ireland were pipped by Austria for the eighth spot in the top flight by one stroke. Scores 

Denmark topped the qualifiers by an astounding 31 strokes from Spain. Flight A draw

World amateur No 9 Stephanie Meadow again top scored with a sensational, four under par 68 with Maria Dunne and Paula Grant shooting 77s, Lisa Maguire a 78 and Leona Maguire a 79. Chloe Ryan’s 87 was discarded.

Ireland will now play Slovenia in Flight B

Thunder and lightning forced a three hour delay in play at the European Girls’ Team Championship at Linkopings in Sweden before flooding led to an abandonment of all scores on Wednesday

That meant that Ireland had no chance to undo the damage of the opening day and were forced to stick with 15th place and a Flight B clash with Czech Republic on Thursday.

Ireland scores from Wednesday were: Mary Doyle 75 Niamh McSherry 76 Ariana Cole Diez 77 Olivia Mehaffey 79 Chloe Weir 80 Laura Doherty 84.

Spain, France, England, Sweden, Finland, Italy, Norway and Scotland took the top eight spots. All Flights
