McHenry's Champions Tour bid fails

Panther Lake at Orange County National. Former Walker Cup and European Tour player John McHenry won’t be playing on the lucrative Champions Tour when he turns 50 next year.

The K Club’s ex-Director of Golf entered Regional Qualifying for the US senior circuit in Florida this week but goes into Friday’s fourth round a daunting 17 strokes outside the last qualifying place for the Final Stage later this month.

The Cork native followed his opening rounds of 74 and 80 with a third round 77 at Orange County National’s Panther Lake Course. Results He is expected to enter the European Senior Tour Q-School in Portugal in January.

At 231, he’s 24 shots behind the leaders - England’s Phil Golding and Americans Bob Friend and Bill Jones - at a venue where the top 18 will progress to the Final Stage.
