How Nike might tool up Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy plays his last official round with Titleist clubs in the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai on 25 November 2012. Photo Eoin Clarke/www.golffile.ieFormer World Clubmaker of the Year Derek Murray has penned a fascinating insight into what he believes Rory McIlroy will have in the bag when he makes what is believed to be a $250m move to Nike Golf in 2013.

The Foregolf owner predicts a “very smooth” transition but wonders how Nike will cater to McIlroy’s needs in what is likely to be a head-to-toe, through-the-bag deal.

Writing on the Foregolf.ie blog, Derek runs through the bag and what McIlroy might be using for the foreseeable future:

“Putter

Always a bit of a contentious issue with Rory but I would imagine nothing that team Nike can’t design and build for him. I would foresee a similar design to what he currently uses but I think a move to a more face balanced putter would help enormously and perhaps a bit more of a back cavity with improved alignment and higher MOI would be a big benefit…..

Driver

Now this is the one club that could potentially upset Rory, as the Titleist driver has not really changed its shape that much in the past 20 years that I have worked on them…. It wouldn’t surprise me if Nike has been working behind the scenes to remedy this. It also wouldn’t surprise me if Nike has been busy designing their next wave of driver around this inevitable transfer of the game’s biggest player… So, don’t be surprised if you see Rory bag the new Nike driver straight away without even batting an eyelid.”
