Irish side named for Eisenhower Trophy

Jonathan Caldwell (Clandeboye), Paul Cutler (Portstewart) and Shane Lowry (Esker Hills) will represent Ireland in the World Amateur Team Championship (Eisenhower Trophy) at the Royal Adelaide Golf Club and Grange Golf Club (East Course) in Adelaide from 16-19 October. The team will be led by non-playing Captain Michael Burns.

Jonny Caldwell

Caldwell, who played in the 2007 Walker Cup at Royal County Down, was a member of the Ireland team that won back to back European Team Championships at Royal Park Golf Club, Turin this year and Western Gailes in Scotland in 2007.

Paul Cutler was also a member of the victorious Irish team in Turin and has a wealth of experience at international level having represented Ireland in the Boys Home Internationals and the European Boys Team Championship.

The current West and North of Ireland champion Shane Lowry has shot up through the World Amateur Golf Rankings this year. The 2007 Irish Close champion currently occupies fifth spot in the world and regards his role in Ireland's back to back European Team Championship titles as being his most memorable moments in golf so far.

A record 72 countries will compete in this biennial event, two more than the number which played in South Africa in 2006. On that occasion the Netherlands emerged as champions while Ireland finished in twelfth position.

The IGF was founded in 1958 to encourage the international development of the game and to employ golf as a vehicle to foster friendship and sportsmanship. Recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the official international federation for golf, the IGF comprises the national governing bodies of golf in more than 110 countries.
