“I dont worry about other guys when I’m training. I get myself ready. Of course I’m racing at the Olympics against other guys. But I’m also racing against the clock. And maybe mostly, against myself, to see how good I can be.” Phelps

Why not to do sit ups and crunches

Check this out. I have been saying this for some time now.

    Portuguese Amateur

I played in the Portuguese Amateur last week without much success unfortunately. I changed my irons to the new grooves about a month ago and as a player who spins the golf ball  a lot this was helping me stop the ball on the green without excessive spin. This would have been very beneficial in Portugal as it was like playing darts over there, the course was that soft.

Unfortunately for me i didnt get to use my new irons as at Irish Coaching Training the weekend before I left for Lisbon, eagle eyed team mate Dara Lernihan spotted my six iron was bent in the head and had to be taken out of play. This meant i was back to my old clubs with the box grooves which meant me doing some serious spinning of the ball in Portugal. This is not good when the pins are at the back as they were in the tournament! The six iron must have got damaged in transit when I got them and I’m amazed I didn’t spot it myself earlier. I reckon a trip to the opticians was needed but more on that story later!

    TPI Certified

    Hiya folks

I spent the weekend in citywest attending the TPI seminar in conjunction with my college (setanta college) and harrington golf.

I am now a qualified TPI golf fitness instructor but more importantly it was a very informative weekend and i learned a lot listening to some of the worlds leading experts in this field such as Lance Gill and Dr.Liam Hennessy. I will definitely be tweaking my programme as a result.

Padraig Harrington was there answering some questions on his training regime which was very interesting. The topic of cardio came up and the only cardio padraig said he does is chasing after his kids. :-)

He did mention he did a lot of speed work in the gym though.

If you understand that golf is a high-intensity intermittent activity sport, don’t make low to moderate “aerobic” activities (such as half hour jogs or 40 mins on the bike) the core of your training program as it will be counter productive. The majority of your time should be spent on activities that fatigue you in a short period of time. If the activity is intense, a minute is a long time! By repeating the activity multiple times, with recoveries of one to three minutes between each repetition, you will train your anaerobic system while also training your cardiovascular system. This type of training is often referred to as interval training and before anyone asks, yes it’s also effective for weight loss. Has anyone seen an overweight sprinter lately? Ive been saying this for a while but im still getting asked questions on it so i hope ive cleared this up.

Spring and the golf season is fast approaching and i kick off my campaign with the portuguese amateur near lisbon in the middle of february. Been practicing hard so looking forward to the season opener. It will also be great to play some golf in some warmer weather which i hope we get. Training wise i will now start to taper down my sessions in the gym and concentrate a lot more on flexibility, core and bodyweight exercises.

    Contact Details

hi folks. just in case anyone is trying to contact me my email is robelnino@yahoo.com

Hope we are all taking advantage of the bad weather and getting in the gym and lifting heavy weights. Every cloud has a silver lining.

    Deadlift video

Check out a video of me deadlifting with Kavo. It is out of date though as I got 150 kg yesterday. Hoping to improve this in the next few months while maintaining good technique. I hear the great man himself Padraig can do 215kg.

One positive about bad weather is you can get some heavy lifting done in the gym as there is no golf to be played the next day. Keep stretching though :-)

    Heavy load training

Getting stuck into some heavy training this week.

    • Squats
    • Deadlifts
    • Chin ups
    • Dips
    • Bench Press
    • Lumberjack Press
    • Bent Over Row

All heavy. Legs are gonna fall off  tonight  :-)

For those of you with no gym to go to, there is plenty of bodyweight stuff for you to do all in the privacy of your own home.

    • Press ups
    • Lunges
    • Tuck jumps
    • Toe touches
    • Spidermans
    • Plank
    • Supermans
    • Drop squats
    • Throw them all in a circuit and do them fast.

    American trip

Just back from a couple of weeks in south carolina and georgia. Had a terrific time and i love it over there. weather was nice and played pretty much every day. swing changes and strength and conditioning training that im working on are coming together nicely and getting better. hit a lot of shots straight down the pin in the states and thats a great sign that im getting better. Still the odd bad shot but thats expected when making adjustments in technique.
Got a bit of training in as well which is just as well as my diet was poor at best over there. it must be pretty hard to stay in shape over there as the food is so nice. cheesecake and crispy creme donuts arent the diet of an athlete! but on a holiday you are allowed a break. back to proper training and nutrition now till christmas where i should be able to knock 1% a week of bodyfat as its probably gone up after my trip.
