Send Darren Clarke, Peter Lawrie and Gary Murphy out on the town and it’s a fair bet that Lawrie would soon be handed the car keys as the designated driver.
It’s not that the Dubliner is more abstemious than the other two, but he’s simply not a man of extremes.

Darren Clarke may have to sweat to make the cut after struggling to a one-over-par 73 in the opening round of the Maybank Malaysian Open in steamy Kuala Lumpur.
The Dungannon man was two under par after three holes but dropped five shots to slip to three over before repairing some of the damage with birdies at the final two holes and share 71st place.

Super straight Peter Lawrie believes he can get back into the winning groove in 2010.
The Castleknock Tour pro, 36, will begin his quest for a second European Tour title in this week’s Joburg Open alongside Darren Clarke, Gary Murphy, Michael Hoey and sponsor's invite Niall Kearney.
And he’s convinced that the ban on box grooves this season will see him reap even greater rewards as one of the straightest hitters on tour.

There are lies and damned statistics but the numbers produced by the European Tour boffins give Padraig Harrington the edge over Rory McIlroy this year.
Yes, McIlroy topped the stroke average and almost won the inaugural Race to Dubai while Harrington floundered in swing tinkering hell for half the season before exploding into life in August.
But if you add together their ranking in the nine Genworth Financial Statistics categories, Harrington finished an average of six places ahead of McIlroy.

Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 2:16 Friday the 13th was a pretty good day for the Irish on tour.
In Spain, John Kelly gave himself a boost ahead of next week's Q-School when he shot the lowest individual score of the week at the PGAs of Europe International Team Championship.
Kelly, David Ryan and Peter Martin all shot four under par 68s to give Ireland the best score of the day, clinching a share of fourth place at Roda in Murcia.

Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 23:43 There's nothing like a crisis to concentrate the mind but Gary Murphy has managed to avoid thinking about "the dark side" in the Madrid Masters and made a positive start.
Damien McGrane and Gary Murphy are tied for ninth in the Madrid MastersWith time running out in his bid to save his tour card, the Kilkenny man opened with a five under par 67 at the Centro Nacional de Golf by simply focussing on his game rather than the grim reality of his situation.
"I would be lying it I said I wasn't thinking about stuff off the course," Murphy confessed.

Monday, September 14, 2009 at 21:03 Peter Lawrie has no regrets about putting his family ahead of a place in Paul McGinley's Vivendi Trophy side.
One out of three ain't badThe Dubliner missed out on a trip to Paris by just €15,210 when he opted to skip last week's Mercedes Benz Championship to be with his wife and new born baby daughter. As a result, he was leapfrogged in the rankings by England's Anthony Wall.

Monday, August 24, 2009 at 23:19 Peter Lawrie has over half a million reasons to be happy with his season despite his sudden-death Dutch Open reverse.
The Dubliner, 35, had victory snatched from his grasp in the KLM Open when he faltered at the finish and Simon Dyson jumped in to take the title after a three-way play-off.

Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 22:16 Paul McGinley. Remember him? He's one of the top candidates for the 2014 European Ryder Cup captaincy. He'll take his first step down that road at the end of next month when he captains the Great Britain and Ireland side against Continental Europe in the Vivendi Trophy (the new name for the Seve Trophy).
