Goodbye Big Difficult - hello Big Easy

“I’ve had a tough run and I really wanted to play well.”

Ernie Els, the Rolls Royce of golf, looked every inch the classic model admired by all when he closed with an immaculate, six under 66 to win the WGC-CA Championship by four shots from his South African protégé Charl Schwartzel at blustery Doral.

    Waiting for Godot

“My father always told me, ‘If you can’t win, play well five months of the year; make sure you play well midseason; if you’re going to pick a time to play well, play well through the four majors.’”

Is he back? Who? Tiger? No, Padraig Harrington.

It’s too soon to say that Harrington has started to mine the kind of form that will make him a force at Augusta in a month’s time, but a four under 68 left the Celtic Tiger just four shots off the lead at the halfway stage of the WGC-CA Championship in Miami.

McDowell on Tiger - "I have never seen him so nervous and so down and depressed about things"

Graeme McDowell believes a “humbled” Tiger Woods will be a changed man when he eventually returns to the game.

Speaking on Sky Sports News just minutes after Woods’ appearance at TPC Sawgrass, the European Ryder Cup star said: “He seemed very humbled by everything when he came out. I have never seen him so nervous and so down and depressed about things. I guess he had a lot of time to think about things and had a lot of regrets.

Harrington down to world No 6

Padraig Harrington has slipped one place to sixth in the first Official World Golf Ranking of 2010.

The Dubliner has swapped places with US Ryder Cup player Jim Furyk. Henrik Stenson is the only other mover in the world's top 10, climbing above Paul Casey into seventh place.

Rory McIlroy remains ninth while Tiger Woods' lead over Phil Mickelson at the top has been reduced from 6.65 to 6.29 world ranking points.

    Harrington more complete than McIlroy

There are lies and damned statistics but the numbers produced by the European Tour boffins give Padraig Harrington the edge over Rory McIlroy this year.

Yes, McIlroy topped the stroke average and almost won the inaugural Race to Dubai while Harrington floundered in swing tinkering hell for half the season before exploding into life in August.

But if you add together their ranking in the nine Genworth Financial Statistics categories, Harrington finished an average of six places ahead of McIlroy.
