Limerick's Ciaran Vaughan with the Connacht U18 Boys Open trophy

Limerick's Ciaran Vaughan shrugged off some late mistake to card a 74 and win the Connacht U18 Boys Open by two strokes at Galway Golf Club.

Leading by a stroke on one over par overnight from Castle's Darragh Smith, he saw Athenry's David Kitt (77-70-70) and Tramore's Jack Hearn (73-73-71) set the target at seven over par.

He was still one over for the tournament with five holes to play and looking comfortable.

But a double bogey six at the 14th, followed by back to back bogeys at the 16th and 17th.. forced him to regroup and made sure he avoided any drama on the last.

With a two stroke lead, he closed with a par four to finish on five over 215 as Powerscourt's Charlie Denvir shot a joint best of the week 69 to finish eighth.

Irish Boys champion Mark Power from Kilkenny showed his class when he signed off with a 71 to take fourth place alongside Smith (76) on eight over 218.
