Stuart Grehan roared back to top form when a red hot Sunday helped him finish runner up in the Carrick Neill Scottish Men's Open Stroke Play Championship at Gullane No 1.

The Tullamore and Maynooth University star had a poor Irish Amateur Open by his high standards. But he proved that was just a minor hiccup as he made 11 birdies on the final day, carding rounds of 67 and 66 to finish four behind teenager Cameron John of Australia on 11 under par.

Winner, Cameron John

John, 17, carded an amateur course record — an eight under 63 — to take a two stroke lead into the final round as Grehan's four under 67 moved him to within five.

In the end, John closed with a nerveless 68 to win by four from Grehan, who dropped just one shot in a 66.

Scottish Amateur Open - Final scores

Grant Forrest was third alongside Grehan on 11 under after a 70 with Castle's Alex Gleeson closing with rounds of 70 and 69 to share 17th on five under.

Portmarnock's Alexander Wilson followed a 70 with a 76 to finish 38th on two over.
