Knock's Colin Fairweather and Royal County Down Ladies' Olivia Mehaffey made positive starts in the XI South American Amateur Championship in Peru.

Irish international Fairweather fired six birdies in a four under 68 to share second place, one stroke behind Argentina's Matías Simaski at Lima Golf Club.

In the women's competition, Mehaffey had two birdies and three bogeys in a one over 73, leaving her tied 12th and five adrift of American Margaret Shirley, who shot a 68 to lead by two shots from Brazil's Luiza Altmann.

Massereene's Tiarnan McLarnon, the Irish Close champion, shares 53rd after a 78 while Castletroy's Chloe Ryan is 50th after an 84.
