County Sligo's Sean Flanagan won the silver medal awarded to the leading qualifier but while fancied runners like Colm Campbell, Niall Gorey and Eoin Arthurs missed the cut, the West of Ireland Championship looks even more wide open than it did before Friday's first round.

Click for draw

As conditions eased — 15 players broke par (compared to one on Friday) and five men shot 67s — Flanagan added a 69 to his opening 73 to finish a shot ahead of Dundalk's Caolan Rafferty on level par 142.

The cut fell at 11 over 153 but only three of the eight players who finished on that mark made the 62 who join defending champion Jack Hume and Irish Close champion John-Ross Galbraith in the first round draw.

Warrenpoint international Campbell, the East of Ireland champion, shot a 76 and ended up being one of the unlucky 153s after a fog-delayed day that forced officials to send the field off in morning and afternoon shotguns starts.

But while there were some tales of woe, there were also some tremendous comebacks on a day when the average score was 73.98 -more than 5.5 shots lower than Friday's 79.38.

Ian O'Rourke., Jack Pierse and Dermot McElroy improved by 11 strokes with 67s to finish tied third on one over 143 with Jonathan Yates, Eugene Smith, John Hickey and Alex Gleeson.

Shane McGlynn (82-67), Kevin Leblanc (80-69) and Paul Murphy (81-71) also impressed, but the men who caught the eye were less flashy.

Gary McDermott's brace of 73s marks him out as a one to watch while the presence of championship winners such as Stephen Walsh, Robbie Cannon and Pat Murray also bodes well alongside talents like Eugene Smith, Barry Anderson, Conor O'Rourke, Eanna Griffin, Gary Collins and Dan Holland.

Then there are experienced "veterans"such as Des Morgan, Joe Lyons, Eddie McCormack and Michael Sinclair. In short, the matchplay should be fascinating.
