Irish interest in the Girls' British Open Amateur Championship ended on the opening day of matchplay combat at Massereene Golf Club in Co Antrim.

Mary Doyle, Annabel Wilson and Chloe Weir all lost in the first round as Niamh McSherry beat Germany's Laura Kowohl and Hermitage's Ciara Casey saw off Scotland's Clara Young to tee it up in the afternoon.

However, both girls made an early exit as McSherry fell by 2 and 1 to 17th seed Paz Mara of Spain and Casey fell 4 and 3 to 29th seeded Italian Arianna Scaletti.
