The Hilary Golfing society was founded in 1953 by Sutton’s Michael Fitzpatrick when the need was identified for competitive golf and match practice in advance of the golfing season.

The society, which was originally to have been called ‘The Top Twenty’, was ultimately named after the Hilary law term which extends from Christmas to Easter each year.

The Hilary committee initially comprised Michael Fitzpatrick, JB Carr and Gerry Owens and were subsequently joined by Noel Fogarty and John Conway.

Eligibility of the society was reserved for players with a handicap of three or better though four handicappers ith Senior Cup experience were also accommodated. Also included were some of the leading professionals of the time including Harry Bradshaw, Nicky Lynch, Christy Greene and Paddy Skerritt.

Over the years the society has included most of the leading amateurs some of whom went on to very successful amateur and professional careers.
