"No truth whatsoever" to Wozzilroy engagement

An updated version of the Daily Mail story featuring a reference to the fact that “This is not true”When Caroline Wozniacki quizzed Rory McIlroy during a press conference at the DP World Tour Championship about what she was getting for Christmas, there were jokes in the media that it wouldn’t be long before the engagement rumours started flying.

As the Gulf News reported at the time:

And with the pair having officially dated since August 2011, it won’t take a tabloid reporter with an ounce of imagination to start wildly speculating about what the gift might be.

No imagination was needed when Wozniacki turned up at Brisbane International Airport sporting a huge diamond on the ring finger of her left hand. Despite the Danish tradition of wearing the engagement ring on the right hand, reports in the Australian media, quickly followed by AP reporting what the Australian press was reporting, followed by the Daily Mail et al, set the Wozzillroy marriage story off and running.

There’s just one problem. It’s not true. A source close to the McIlroy clan said: “There is no truth to it whatsoever.”

Later on Friday, Irish media outlets were reporting that McIlroy had issued a statement:

“On behalf of Rory McIlroy I would like to confirm that he has NOT become engaged to Caroline Wozniacki as was originally reported in Australian press,” a short statement reads. “Rory is in Australia to support Caroline before he heads in January to Abu Dhabi.”
