Europro win for McElhinney

By Brian Keogh

Wind expert Brian McElhinney stormed out of the pack to grab his first professional win on the PGA Europro Tour.

The Donegal ace, 24, fired a three under par 68 to finish on two under par and win the Oceanico Group Irish Classic at Roganstown by a shot.

With high winds gusting at the Swords track, McElhinney came from five shots off the lead to pocket a massive cheque for €15,000.

The 2005 British Amateur winner was tied for eighth overnight on one over par.

But he hit five birdies - four of them in a stunning back nine - and just two bogeys to win by one stroke from Joe Templar, Alex Smith and Robert Steele.

Dubliner Noel Fox, who was tied for second overnight, bogeyed the last three holes to finish an agonising three shots off the pace on one over par after a 75.
